North Carolina Affordable Housing Conference

On Oct. 16 and 17, 2008, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency joined the North Carolina Housing Coalition and the Community Investment Corporation of the Carolinas for the first time to offer the state’s most comprehensive housing conference ever — all focusing on what’s needed to take affordable housing to the next level.

The keynote session offered an inspirational peek into one of the country’s first green, solar-powered affordable housing communities. Anne Wilson, vice president of housing and real estate development for Community HousingWorks in San Diego, CA, discussed Solara, an affordable multifamily community in Poway, CA. Incorporating energy efficiency, water efficiency, use of recycled materials, and indoor air quality, the development has received more than 10 awards. Breakout sessions offered practical tips — all applicable for North Carolina — on green building, healthy housing and water conservation.

The Conference also featured a legislative update on state and national housing issues, the annual tax credit developers’ workshop, a CRA update, an update on state housing markets and foreclosure mitigation efforts, and best practice examples of local housing development and preservation.

Special conference alternatives included a four-hour continuing education course for Realtors®, “Financing Dreams”; and a certification course for tax credit property managers with national trainer A. J. Johnson.

The highlight of the Oct. 16 luncheon was the presentation of the 2008 Housing North Carolina Awards.

The North Carolina Housing Coalition celebrated its 20th anniversary at its Annual Legislative and Advocacy Awards Luncheon on Oct. 17.
