Housing for Persons with Special Needs |

If you are seeking affordable housing that offers accessibility options or supportive services, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency may be able to help.
Many of the affordable apartments we finance have accessibility options, such as curb-less showers, or are offered through local service providers for persons with disabilities, including physical, mental and developmental disabilities. These

apartments are affordable for households with lower incomes. They are owned and operated by private owners, local governments, and nonprofit organizations. Some apartments include rent assistance to make them affordable to persons living on Supplemental Security Income (SSI). You will find a statewide listing at NCHousingSearch.org, or by contacting your service provider.
Supportive and transitional housing for persons with special needs is also available in many communities. The N.C. Housing Finance Agency provides financing that helps nonprofit agencies and local governments develop these facilities, which frequently offer support services on site. You may be eligible if your household requires supportive services, including persons with mental, physical, or developmental disabilities; persons with substance use disorders; persons diagnosed with AIDS and related diseases; and special populations, such as domestic violence survivors, on a case-by-case basis. The Housing Resource Guide can help you find supportive housing in your area.
The Displacement Prevention Program that we operate in partnership with the N.C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation pays for accessibility modifications for disabled homeowners with lower incomes. The Urgent Repair Program finances similar home modifications and other repairs to cure safety hazards, such as faulty electrical systems and leaky roofs. The Single Family Rehab Program provides major home rehabilitation through local governments and nonprofit organizations. Links to organizations that provide these programs can be found on each program page.
