Workshops and Technical Assistance
Housing counseling training
If your organization is a New Homes Loan Pool or Self-Help Loan Pool member or you are a participant in the IDA Loan Pool, your borrowers through these programs will need to complete HUD-certified housing counseling. Your organization can either offer the counseling itself or partner with a counseling organization in your community.
If you are an individual seeking to become certified in housing counseling, contact the North Carolina Association of Housing Counselors.
If your organization is seeking to become certified in housing counseling, contact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD-approved housing counseling organizations must be nonprofit, demonstrate a commitment to their proposed service area, and have experience administering housing counseling programs.
Reverse mortgage and predatory lending counseling training
Federal regulations and North Carolina law require that homeowners applying for reverse mortgages or considering high-cost loans must receive counseling. The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency offers training in reverse mortgage and predatory lending counseling.
The Agency offers this training for those who work in the following areas:
- HUD-approved counseling agency
- Legal services office
- Local/regional aging services program.
The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is offering Reverse Mortgage Training Workshops for staff working in qualified non-profit organizations who are interested in becoming recertified or certified as a reverse mortgage counselor. To register or find out information about an upcoming workshop, please contact Phyllis Watt at pjwatt@nchfa.com.
If you are interested in becoming certified in either reverse mortgage or predatory lending, please contact Mary Reca Todd at mtodd@nchfa.com or 919-877-5672.
Supportive Housing Development Program Workshops
The Supportive Housing Development Program offers workshops several times per year covering the basics of supportive housing development as well as specific information about the Supportive Housing Development Program. These workshops are offered at no cost and are held at different locations around the State. For information about upcoming workshops, please see the calendar of events. If you would like to be added to a notification list regarding upcoming workshops or would like to sign up for a workshop, please contact James Cook at jcook@nchfa.com or 919-877-5707.
SystemVision™ training
The SystemVision™ Energy Guarantee Program is a partner program to the New Homes Loan Pool and the Self-Help Loan Pool. Training sessions for SystemVision™ are conducted throughout the year by building scientists/trainers from Advanced Energy Corporation, a nonprofit organization in Raleigh that partners with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency.
Organizations interested in the SystemVision™ option should send key staff and/or contractors to the session prior to beginning their housing development. The one-day workshop covers all the construction standards and requirements for building a SystemVision™ home and explains the research and building science behind the standards. Topics include moisture control; building a tight house; the best way to insulate; getting the biggest bang for your HVAC buck; fresh air ventilation; and combustion safety and indoor air quality.
Registration is required for each attendee, as seating is limited. For more information and to register, contact Sonia Joyner at 919-877-5630 or sbjoyner@nchfa.com.
