Fair Housing Act Self-Evaluation
The Fair Housing Act requires that all new multifamily dwellings consisting of four or more dwelling units meet certain design criteria so that the dwellings can later be adapted for use as supportive housing without significant structural renovations. In buildings with four or more dwelling units, if the building does not have an elevator, the design requirements apply to all ground floor units. If the building does have an elevator, the requirements apply to all units. The design standards apply if the building is built for first occupancy on or after March 13, 1991. The self-evaluation form enables management companies, owners, and prospective buyers, to check the property's compliance with the Fair Housing Act. This is not a complete and definitive assurance that the property in question is in compliance, but should enable you to assess any areas of possible concern.
If you answer "No" to any of the questions on the form, then a thorough assessment/examination should be conducted by a qualified agency.
